Unfiltered
A Poem: The Cost of Niceness, The Power of Truth.
What if you let yourself be unfiltered— just for a day, maybe an hour? What if every thought that crossed your mind found its way into the world, unpolished, real? We’ve been told since childhood, “If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.” But silence can be a quiet poison, a cage where truth withers, where beliefs shrink into whispers, where voices fade before they’re heard. We’ve grown afraid of honesty, worried that truth will be mistaken for harm, that speaking our hearts will be seen as unkind. But kindness—kindness is not niceness. Kindness is raw, it’s heart and soul, it’s love that doesn’t bend to please. Niceness? A performance, a costume stitched by society, a mask worn to be more likable, more lovable, more tolerable, more… digestible. Niceness is not truth. Niceness is a shield for people pleasers who’ve learned that honesty has a cost. So what if, just for today, you stopped rearranging yourself to fit into someone else’s mold? What if you gave yourself the grace you so freely offer others? Or don’t— The choice is always yours.
